Joseph Vella’s Concerto No 10 for Trumpet and Brass Ensemble op 124 will be given its world premiere in Paris on May 28.

It will be played by Alexis Demailly, accompanied by 25 members of the Paris Brass Band.

Demailly is the first trumpet of the Orchestre de l’Opera de Bastille. Last December the Paris Brass Band won the All-France National Championship for brass bands.

This month, three of Vella’s major works will have been premiered. On May 3 his Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra op 121 (his ninth in the series of 10concertos composed so far) was premiered at the Manoel Theatre, with soloist Godfrey Mifsud and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer himself.

This concerto will be repeated at the Hans Eissler Academy in Berlin on July 1 with Israeli clarinettist Nur Ben Shalom.

May 7 saw the premiere of Vella’s new oratorio Filippu t’Aggira op 122 at Żebbuġ parish church.

This 90-minute work for soloists, choir and band was commissioned by the 12th May Band Club of Żebbug to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
