Charging points for electric cars, being installed in Malta and Gozo, will be available for use free of charge for a year, the government announced yesterday.

A total of 75 charging points are in the process of being installed in Malta and another 15 in Gozo. A number of electric cars are being used by the Transport Ministry and one of them is being used by the Gozo Ministry.

According to the Climate Change and Energy Targets, by 2020 Malta should have 5,000 electric cars on the road.

Road transport accounted for almost 17 per cent of emissions in Malta, an alarming and unacceptable figure, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said.

He said the government was committed to making transport in Malta sustainable not only through the promotion of electric cars but also through an efficient bus service.
