More than 170 newly-planted trees were uprooted and stolen from the Xrobb l-Għaġin Park over the weekend, Nature Trust Malta said.

The trees were planted during an event held to mark the 50th anniversary of the environmental NGO. They included trees planted by President George Abela, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat.

Apart from taking the trees, the vandals also broke into a store room and stole tools, pipes and wheelbarrows. Two months ago, vandals struck at the Wied Għollieqa Nature Reserve, spraying graffiti on restored rubble walls.

Nature Trust condemned the “cowardly acts” and appealed to anyone having information about the theft or the vandal attack to contact the police so the culprits would be brought to justice.

The Labour Party also condemned these acts.

The NGO referred the case to the police and said it would be installing a CCTV system at the park.
