The Tommy Hilfiger Challenge is spread over three days, the ladies play on Thursday and the men on Saturday. On Sunday the best 80 of the two previous days compete for the trophy.

The format adopted was based on a Stableford competition, played off full handicap and aggregate over the two days.

On the first day, Yvonne van Beek returned with a stunning 45 points, John Fletcher, the Royal Malta Golf Club (RMGC) captain, had 40 followed by Emmanuel Agius, 39, and Andy Borg, 38.

This result placed Van Beek in a commanding position.

However, to hang on to such a lead requires a degree of consistency which is not always the feature of those with a high handicap. Van Beek has a handicap of 23 whereas Borg has plus 1.

Borg took on the challenge. On Sunday, he birdied eight holes and eagled the eighth, giving him an outstanding score of 41 points.

Van Beek, however, was up to the task and despite a disappointing result on the first nine holes, she still managed 35 points.

In the end, Van Beek won the tournament with an aggregate of 80. Borg was the runner-up only one point behind.

Fletcher was the runner-up in the men’s list with 74 and Michelle Allsopp followed Van Beek in the women’s com-petition with 67.

Jonathan Shaw, Tommy Hilfiger (Malta) managing director, was on hand to distribute prizes during the presentation ceremony.
