Reunited on screen after 35 years, Isabelle Huppert and Gérard Depardieu star as the long-separated parents whose son died and who meet up again in order to honour his last request.

The well-known French actors play husband and wife who both receive a letter from their late, eldest son, Michael, instructing them to meet in the so-called ‘Death Valley’ on a specific November date, whereupon he claims he will briefly appear to them.

Guillaume Nicloux’s Valley of Love is a cryptic piece, covering metaphysical terrain and which is intertwined with the musings on both actors’ star personae which oscillate between strange realities and familiar fiction. Confusing audiences further, the names of the actors’ characters are their own, Isabelle and Gérard and they are also actors.

The Guardian writes that “the colour palette of bleached bone whites and brilliant blues, and the haunting music of Charles Ives add to the odd, mesmerising atmosphere.”

Critic Roger Ebert holds that is it “evocative, sometimes puzzling, and sometimes moving”.

■ Spazju Kreattiv is screening the film at St James Cavalier in Valletta tonight at 9pm. It is suitable for those aged 15 and over. It will be shown in French with English subtitles. For more information, visit http://kreattivita.org.
