Valletta San Antonio staged an impressive comeback against Aloysians and now they could force a decider to retain their Division One title if they beat Mġarr in their remaining league match.

Aloysians needed a win to claim the men’s league honours for the first time in their history, having beaten Valletta in the first round.

They made their intentions clear in the first set which they won convincingly.

The second set was similar to the first, with Valletta suffering in service reception as Aloysians kept their calm to win point after point and close it at 25-21.

Valletta finally reacted by showing more fighting spirit in the next set.

The result was inevitable with the Reds wrapping the set at 25-20, clawing their way back into a game that looked completely lost.

Valletta piled on the pressure and raced ahead in the fourth set. But Aloysians levelled the score at 24-24 to set up a thrilling final.

In fact, they had six championship points annulled as the Reds finally prevailed 37-35.

The final set, played after over 150 minutes, was tense. Aloysians took the upperhand (8-4) with Valletta earning some points to stay in contention. Aloysians soon set themselves up with two more title-winning points when the score read 14-12 in their favour.

But one final push by Valletta saw them turn the tables on their opponents to win the set 18-16 and the game 3-2.

In the women’s league, Fleur-de-Lys beat Depiro 3-2 to set up a title decider against Paola Hibs Candy tomorrow.
