A Valletta football club supporter was yesterday charged with illegally carrying a knife when he got into a fight with a man at the Labour Party Club in Republic Street on Saturday.

Standing in the dock sporting a black eye and a polo shirt emblazoned with his team’s badges, Mark Ryan, 43, from Valletta, denied the charges.

Police Inspector Kylie Borg said that by his ownadmission, Mr Ryan had spent the day drinking. He started downing alcohol at 11 a.m. and the fight occurred about 11 hours later.

Although no one was hurt, it was a very serious incident, the inspector argued, especially when viewed in the light of the fact that the accused had already been jailed once before for slightly injuring someone.

Magistrate Edwina Grima granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000.
