The daily market in Valletta’s Merchants and Old Theatre streets will be opening for business on Sundays as well.

The hours of the daily market will not affect the market in Blata l-Bajda

From this Sunday, it will be open every day from 7am to 2pm.

The Valletta local council yesterday welcomed the news, saying the move was the result of a council meeting held on July 19, when representatives of the hawkers presented a formal request to extend their trading days. The council supported this request and on July 23, Mayor Alexei Dingli presented it in writing to Small Business Minister Jason Azzopardi. He also presented a draft amendment to the Fourth Schedule of Subsidiary Legislation 441/07.

Dr Dingli and Minister Azzopardi said in separate statements that the measure will inject more life into the city over the weekends.

In February last year, the popular Sunday flea market – Il-Monti – was shifted from St James Ditch, Valletta, to Blata l-Bajda.

The extended hours will not affect the Sunday market in Blata l-Bajda, even though it includes some of the Merchant Street hawkers.
