It will be free to park in Valletta after 2pm during the week and throughout the weekend from Monday, as changes are introduced to the controlled driving scheme.

Vehicles entering the capital between 8am and 2pm on weekdays will be charged 82c per hour, if staying over half an hour, up to a maximum of €6.52 in one day. A discount of 10 per cent will apply for pre-payments or direct debit arrangements.

Under the CVA, charges have so far been applicable until 6pm during the week and on Saturday mornings. The aim is to encourage more people to come into Valletta.

The CVA system started well enough when it was introduced in 2007 but the latest figures show that 84 per cent of the 300,000 vehicles that enter Valletta every year are exempt from payment or stay for less than 30 minutes, so the charge did not apply.
