Having served as manager and coach during the glorious mid-seventies, I felt delighted when asked to review Carmel Baldacchino’s latest publication which deals with the history of Valletta FC and football in the capital from way back 1886 up to 1963.

Appropriately titled ‘City’, this publication relates in great detail all the happenings from the early origins, which include the first honours in 1914-15 when football was played at the Mile End, till the exceptional 1962-63 season at the Empire Stadium, in Gzira.

The writer refers to the different clubs that have represented Valletta in the league and the amalgamation of Valletta St Paul’s and Valletta Prestons in 1943 which gave birth to Valletta FC.

It is a most interesting volume which should grace every library that deals with football in Malta.
