It pains me to see how a good number of politicians become different persons once elected to Parliament. The same people who carry the hopes and trust of those who elected them, suddenly start to talk and behave differently, making compromises of all kinds, especially where values, which many of their own constituents hold dear, are concerned.

These values are simply thrown out of the window or diluted in the name of political expediency, toeing the party line or on the premise that what one believes is a personal thing and should not be imposed on others. Values remain values and one has to be true to them and, indeed, to oneself.

One should call a spade a spade. A father will always be a father and a mother will always be a mother. Nature itself speaks out loudly that men and women were created for each other and they complement each other.

Those of a different sexual orientation, of whom I have many friends whom I greatly respect, have every right to live together, if they so choose, but, whichever way you look at it, their union can never be termed as marriage.

It is unfair that the very idea of marriage with all the related terminology is put into question in the new marriage law. This is only the start of worse things to come regarding IVF treatment and embryo freezing, surrogacy, adoption by same-sex couples and, possibly, more.

This is a very delicate issue that deserves time and careful thought. It also needs men and women who stand up to be counted, to go against the grain and act with a true conscience, in the name of the family, society at large and, yes, to be true to themselves, to make a difference towards the good, even if it costs them dearly.
