A drug addict who failed to make the most of an opportunity to reform was jailed yesterday.

Carlos Galea, 27, from Marsa had been given a 15-month jail term suspended for four years by Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera in 2009. That was converted into effective imprisonment by the same magistrate after his probation officer reported dismal progress.

Mr Galea tested positive for cocaine use and also seemed to be trying to pull the wool over everybody’s eyes when he would spend periods of time making temporary progress to give the impression he really wanted to reform, probation officer Marilyn Attard reported.

Dr Scerri Herrera said she had given him the opportunity to reform and get back on the straight and narrow when he had shown willingness to kick the habit. She had given him a suspended jail term because she believed he had genuinely wanted to rehabilitate but he had shown otherwise.
