The former operator of the canteens at the University of Malta and Junior College is being sued by the University for €606,423 in overdue rent and payment for water and electricity.

A court yesterday upheld a request to issue a warrant to stop Joseph and Catherine Micallef, in representation of JM Operations, from selling properties in Għaxaq until the case is decided, since the property is the couple’s only asset.

The company took over the running of the canteens following a contract signed on September 22, 2010. The keys were handed back last June.

The University says payments are due for the period between July 1 of 2012 to June 30. The Micallefs are arguing that the university had not honoured conditions in the contract and therefore should not be expecting payment.

The court upheld the university’s request for the granting of the warrant until the merits of the case are decided.
