The nurses’ union has withdrawn its call for the resignation of the Health Minister, made three months ago, after saying it was satisfied with the creation of new posts that will safeguard the occupational health of its members.

The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses welcomed the fact that the “long awaited posts” for occupational health nurses had finally been issued by the Health Division. This happened after a series of meetings were held between the union and thedivision.

The occupational health nurses will be based at Mater Dei Hospital and will provide services to all employees working in government hospitals. The division also issued posts for practice development nurses.

In October last year, union president Paul Pace called for the resignation of Health Minister Joe Cassar over a speech he delivered during a conference themed Caring for Doctors.

Mr Pace had said the minister did not have the decency to make any reference to the agreement signed between the MUMN and the Health Division to set up an occupational health unit.

The agreement was reached in Novem-ber 2010.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mr Pace said now that the agreement had been honoured, the union had withdrawn its call for the minister’s resignation.
