Gozitan students at the University in Malta could sit some exams on the island next month, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said.

This formed part of a pilot project by the University of Malta in collaboration with the ministry to encourage more young Gozitans to pursue their studies at tertiary level.

About 1,000 Gozitan students attended the University in Malta, Ms Debono said, and the number had doubled over the past decade.

Through the pilot, 71 examination sessions covering seven different courses will be held in Gozo.

The aim is to expand this to cover most courses in future.

The Labour Party spokesman for Gozo, Anton Refalo, said his party had long been recommending that Gozitan University students be allowed to sit for their exams in Gozo.
