During my time as mayor of Victoria, one of the road projects the local council was interested in was the building of a new road starting from the lower part of Viani Street, corner with Europa Street, and extending to the lower part of Capuchins Street.

This project was initially promoted by the Gozo Ministry.

The main aim of both council and ministry was to relieve the city’s main thoroughfare from a good volume of traffic that normally proceeds from Mġarr towards the popular bay of Marsalforn.

A second benefit would obviously be a faster and shorter journey for hundreds of motorists on their way back to Mġarr Harbour from this popular seaside resort.

The council had the satisfaction of seeing the very start of some works on this new road.

In fact, some buildings were already erected on its first part. My council was so enthusiastic about this project that it was unanimously agreed to have it named after our renowned poet Ġorġ Pisani.

But for some reason, works on this new road have been discontinued. In fact, the ceramic plaque displaying “Triq Ġorġ Pisani” affixed to the first building today only leads to a short cul-de-sac.

I feel that enough time has elapsed for any existing obstacles to be tackled.

This important thoroughfare merits completion as it will help ease traffic congestions in the city core.

I am at a loss why both the Gozo Ministry and the local council have given up on such an important step.
