The US last Wednesday granted cash-strapped ally Jordan nearly €264 million to support the kingdom’s economic and political development.

The US Agency for International Development grant “will support economic and political development, enhance health and education services, improve management of water resources and address issues relating to poverty,” the US embassy said.

The planning ministry said the funds are part of Washington’s 2011 economic aid to Jordan.

“The annual US assistance will be provided to Jordan as scheduled ...by the end of this year,” the ministry quoted US Ambassador Stuart Jones as saying.

Washington recently granted Amman 50,000 tonnes of wheat.

Jordan is a major beneficiary of US aid, having received more than €5.4 billion over 60 years, the embassy said.
