The Malta U-16 girls team grabbed their first win in the European Championship Division C when they crushed Wales 64-26 in La Vella, Andorra, yesterday.

After losing their group opener against Andorra 66-23 on Monday, Sandro Farrugia’s team needed to win yesterday’s match to progress to the qualification round. The Maltese girls reached their goal in convincing fashion and will now face Monaco or Gibraltar tomorrow.

Malta started strongly and surged into a 13-6 lead after the first session.

Wales were struggling and it was no surprise that the Maltese team extended their advantage to nine points at the interval, 25-16.

The match maintained the same pattern on the resumption with the Maltese girls clearly a cut above their opponents to canter home to a convincing victory.

Maria Bonett and Julia Xerri were Malta’s leading scorers with 16 points.
