When an infant would not stop crying at a family event, two youngsters thought a ride on a motor bike would calm him down but they were soon stopped by the police and then troubled ensued.

The family get-together was being held in Ħamrun on Tuesday evening. Sources said it was at about midnight when the two youths decided to take the four-year-old boy for a bike ride to stop him from crying. However, they were soon spotted by three policemen who noticed all three on the bike, none of them wearing a helmet. The officers stopped them, an argument ensued and the policemen sustained slight injuries, the sources said.

A 21-year-old and a 15-year-old, who are related, were arraigned yesterday in connection with the incident. Their names cannot be published by court order.

They pleaded not guilty to disobeying orders and assaulting and threatening the officers.

The teenager was accused of slightly injuring the three officers and the older one denied driving without a licence, without a helmet and carrying passengers without a helmet and relapsing.

Lawyer Michael Sciriha asked for bail on grounds that the police officers were the only witnesses in the case and, therefore, there would be no fear of witnesses being intimidated.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna granted them bail against a personal guarantee of €500 each.
