Two men were “stabbed” during the Isle of MTV concert in Floriana last Tuesday, a health spokesman said.

The spokesman said that at least 85 people had needed medical attention from the emergency doctors and nurses, family physicians and voluntary service first-aiders at hand on the Granaries.

Of the 85, seven required urgent treatment at Mater Dei Hospital. These included the two men who sustained “stab” wounds to their legs, a person suffering from “acute gastritis and fainting”, another who was in an “acute confusional state and hysteria” and four who were suffering from facial trauma, lacerations and bruising.

All these cases were further assessed at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department and all were discharged during the night.

Nobody attending the concert sought medical attention at health centres.

“In fact, the one at Floriana was particularly quiet,” the spokesman said, adding that considering there were a record 50,000 people on the Granaries, the number of those needing medical help was quite low.

“Comparatively this was indeed very, very low.

“We’ve sometimes had more than seven casualties at the hospital following a fight at a village feast band march,” he remarked.

A St John’s Ambulance spokesman painted a similar picture. She reported cases where volunteers had to administer intravenous drips to counteract dehydration on site.

“The fact that we had a slight breeze also helped because many did not faint due to excessive heat. There was a certain calmness. It seemed the crowd was not as euphoric as in previous years,” the spokesman said, adding that the apparent stabbings, however, did not augur well at all for the future.

A number of questions were put to the police on the same day (Wednesday) as the health and St John’s Ambulance spokesmen were contacted. However, these remained unanswered at the time of writing.

The police were asked about the type of incidents during the concert, if any arrests were made and if so how many, whether any people would be arraigned, whether there were any scuffles, whether any police officers were injured, whether any people/officers were hospitalised and, if so, what sort of injuries did they sustain, how old were those involved in the incidents and, finally, how many police officers were on duty at the Granaries for the concert.
