Two men yesterday admitted to stealing about €13,000 worth of sugar, almonds and other baking goods from the warehouse of the popular confectioner C. Camilleri and Sons.

Justin Farrugia, 20, and James Long, 31, both from Cospicua admitted to squirrelling away the large amount of baking goods and selling them to bakeries at a fraction of their cost price.

The thefts occurred between September and December in Qormi.

Ephraim Tanti, 30, also from Cospicua denied the charge and was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000.

Lawyer Matthew Bondin, appearing for Mr Long, said that his client had only worked for the company for three weeks during the run up to Christmas and so his share of the stolen items was far smaller than Mr Farrugia’s.

In Mr Long’s case, Magistrate Anthony Vella handed down an 18-month jail term suspended for three years and Mr Farrugia got two years suspended for four years.

Lawyer Giannella de Marco appeared for Mr Tanti.

Lawyer Veronique Dalli appeared for Mr Farrugia.
