Two men who had too much to drink yesterday admitted assaulting policemen in Paceville.

Frenchman Jean Dean, 29, from Ġzira and Briton Michael Gill, 41, from St Paul’s Bay, were arrested at about 2am on Monday after getting involved in separate arguments with policemen, the court heard. Officers were called to a nightclub after a drunken Mr Drean became violent. Defence lawyer Martin Fenech said his client regretted what had happened and asked for a pre-sentencing report to be drawn up. The lawyer also asked for bail, adding that Mr Drean’s girlfriend was pregnant.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke granted him bail against a deposit of €300 and a personal guarantee of €2,000, with sentencing expected on December 2.

Mr Gill, who chose not to be represented by a lawyer, also admitted to slightly injuring taxi driver, Alan Ciantar, and damaging his vehicle.

He was sentenced to nine months in jail suspended for two years and ordered to pay the driver €177 for the damage caused.
