Ten cars were damaged in last month’s spate of vandalism at Mater Dei Hospital car park, but so far, just two cases have been solved, the police have said. Replying to questions sent by Times of Malta a fortnight ago, a spokesman said the vandalism had occurred in the space of eight days between February 17 and 25.

Most of the vehicles, which were parked in the space allocated for doctors and medical staff at level -1, had their rear quarter windows smashed.

The police noted that the security cameras proved to be little help, with nine of the 10 incidents taking place outside their range.

In the other case the footage available proved to be “futile”, they said.

The most serious case involved a convertible BMW Series 1 whose soft-top was ripped, causing some €1,500 in damage.

The police confirmed that six cars were broken into during the night of Friday, February 21. Only a global positioning system and some personal belongings of little value were stolen.

The following day €80 in cash, a vehicle log book and some personal belongings – including a bunch of keys – were stolen from two cars that had their passenger windows smashed. A 29-year-old man was subsequently charged in connection with these two cases, as well as with a number of others reported in San Ġwann, Santa Venera, Msida and Valletta.

Stefan Cutajar, from Safi, who pleaded not guilty to damaging and breaking into six cars, was also charged with breaching the conditions of previous releases and relapsing.
