After beating Sunderland 3-1 at home, the Blues jetted out to Japan for the World Club Cup. They beat Monterrey 3-1 in their semi-final but failed to win the title after going down 1-0 to Corinthians, the South American champions.

Manager Rafael Benitez was quick to remind his critics that Chelsea were still involved in four competitions and his team went on to crush Leeds 5-1 at Elland Road and reach the semi-finals of the League Cup.
