The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean has sent its condolences to the Speaker of the House Michael Frendo over the death of former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff.

In a letter, secretary general Sergio Piazzi said Mr Mintoff would long be remembered by the emerging nations of the Mediterranean for his significant contribution to instil a sense of pride, identity and self-determination among even the smallest of populations.

Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo also sent his condolences, describing Mr Mintoff as a great statesman in Maltese history and for his “outstanding qualities: a great orator, a man with a strong personality and of deeply-held convictions.”
