The other day, we followed a truck from Mellieħa as far as the St Paul’s Bay bypass.

The back of the truck was full of live pigs. There was nothing to restrain these poor animals and as the truck went down the steep winding hill from Mellieħa towards Xemxija they were squealing because they were squashed up against each other. When the truck went round bends, the pigs it was carrying were rolling from one side of the vehicle to the other and, sometimes, were in very awkward positions against the side of the truck and against each other as the driver made no attempt to reduce speed.

This is a very inhumane form of transportation. Is this the normal practice in Malta?

The truck itself had no rear registration number, as one can see from the photo (taken by my passenger through the windscreen of a moving car).
