A nurse who was transferred three times “without any explanation” yesterday filed a judicial protest complaining about the situation and claiming she had been the victim of sexual harassment by colleagues.

Jane Carabott said she had spent the longest period of her career working in the Fairyland Ward at St Luke’s Hospital. For 15 years, she said she gave her all to the patients, earning respect and a very good reputation.

Suddenly and without warning, in 2008, she was told to report for work at the Malta International Airport clinic. So sudden was the transfer that the clinic at the airport knew nothing of the transfer and she was not even given the necessary security clearance to be able work there.

In her protest against the Superintendent of Public Health and the Chief Government Medical Officer, Ms Carabott said she was kept “in a state of bureaucratic limbo” for seven months until she was transferred to Mount Carmel Hospital, where she said she suffered unacceptable working conditions.

She complained to the nurses’ union, the MUMN, and the Ombudsman and was eventually moved back to the airport.

Ms Carabott claimed that she was sexually harassed by a doctor there.

An investigation was opened by the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality and she said that she had since been the victim of further abuse by colleagues who she accused of trying to undermine her credibility.

Ms Carabott said that she had suffered and was still suffering damages as a consequence of the decision to have her transferred.

She is holding the authorities responsible for damages.

Lawyer Roberto Montalto signed the protest.
