The Education Consultative Council was set up in 2007 by the Malta Financial Services Authority to act as a forum for debate, coordination and information-sharing on matters relating to training and development for current and prospective employees in the finance sector.

At present, the Education Consultative Council embraces as members: the Malta International Training Centre; Institute of Financial Services; Institute of Financial Services Practitioners; Institute of Legal Studies; Malta Institute of Accountants; Institute of Business and Commerce within MCAST; Student Services Education Division within the Directorate for Educational Services; and the Youth Section within ETC.

Since its formation, the council has fulfilled its main role of supporting the work of financial service education providers through the coordination of initiatives taken by the MFSA, various national entities and the finance industry. One also notes that another primary aim of the council is to encourage its members to pool resources and, with the support of the MFSA, to offer jointly organised programmes aimed to fill skills gaps in the finance sector.

In addition, the ECC is committed to fulfil its role as a key player in the provision of information to those who would like to pursue or advance in their career within the financial services sector through its website and regular school visits made by students pursuing business-related subjects at secondary schools.

Moreover, it has become an annual event for the ECC to organise the job exposure programme for students at secondary level attending government, independent and church schools. The aim of the programme is to give students a work-related experience within the financial service sector. It also serves to further promote existing careers in finance. The initiative was first launched in 2009 and since then, 356 students have taken part in this scheme.
