Only a few months ago a traffic fatality occurred in Victor Vassallo Street, the widest street in Attard. At a press conference given by the mayor, the message was given that high speed was the cause of this accident. The mayor also pointed out that although his council made a request to have traffic-calming measures (sleeping policemen) placed on the street, this was turned down by Transport Malta.

I suggest that cameras be installed along Victor Vassallo Street as a strong deterrent to speeding drivers. Only recently, I witnessed another accident along this same street, at the corner with Triq is-Sienja. In this instant the most careless driver was not only driving at a high speed, but he was also driving with a mobile phone in his hand.

My second suggestion to the authority is to have local wardens patrolling the area more often. I am sure this will help save lives and install some sort of order in our locality.

I understand a similar request by residents from another busy street (Lorenzo Manchè Street) to have traffic-calming measures along this street, facing Scotts Supermarket, was given the cold shoulder by the mayor as the local council lacked funds.

Local councils cannot run their localities without proper funding. May I suggest to the minister in charge of local councils to provide more funds to councils so that these safety measures can be introduced, as well as the widening of certain roads in the area, namely Triq il-Pruna, Triq il-Għenba, Triq il-Linja, Triq Ġanni Portelli and Triq Antonio Schembri.
