Our little island is overflowing with cars and being suffocated. Daily traffic jams are commonplace. James McIntosh’s letter (April 22) points in the right direction: abolish the circulation tax, increase tax on fuel and improve the bus system (if you can call it a system). Traffic can only be effectively reduced through financial and political ‘persuasion’.

Some suggestions: increase import duty on cars and car parts, introduce yearly inspection of cars, make driving licence requirements more severe (also for drivers over 65), enforce existing laws and regulations, facilitate pedestrian and cycle circulation, etc.

Suggestions for transportation: penalise Arriva for bad service, improve roads, maintain buses better, ensure cleaner buses, fire negative bus drivers, increase bus use by having one fare: €1.50 a one-day ticket, longer bus service, etc.

My political suggestions: introduction of a public initiative in order to give the people the right to have direct influence upon politics without having to ‘court’ politicians and more frequent elections of politicians to increase their accountability to the people, etc.

In the end, it is a question of political will (maybe pushed by public opinion) whether our traffic problem will be solved or not.

Remember: the people deserve the politicians they elect.
