This year’s carnival in Gozo will take people on a trip down memory lane with the performance of the Kumittiva. A group of young and not so young people will swing to this very old folk carnival dance accompanied by music played on traditional instruments.

This dance is being kept alive thanks to the Fondazzjoni Kumittiva Għawdex, which is rekindling the carnival spirit in the younger generations. The dance, which involves several movements, comes to an end with what is known as the Bixkilla, Nisġa, or Maypole dance – the weaving of red and white ribbons round a cane basket held high on a pole by the circular dancing of the performers.

The Kumittiva will be performed on Friday in Victoria and Saturday and next Sunday in Xagħra.
