No vehicle from the circa 200 Toyota models tested so far through a company recall, has been found faulty.

The cars are being recalled because of a fire risk posed by electric window switches.

A spokesman for Michael Debono Ltd, Malta’s official Toyota centre, said the recall involves 2,616 “potentially affected” vehicles purchased locally and imported from the UK.

The models involved are Yaris, Auris and Rav4.

The company is still awaiting further communication from Transport Malta about Japan-ese imports.

Around 1,200 car owners have already been contacted by registered mail while the rest will be contacted in the coming days. More than 350 cars have already been booked for the test.

The test involves removing the switch panel on the driver’s side and testing the master switch with a diagnostic tool.

If the switch is found in perfect running condition a special lubricant is applied. If found to be faulty, it is completely replaced free of charge.

The number of cars affected worldwide by Toyota’s recall amounts to 7.4 million and the problem was first reported in the US in September 2008.
