Toyota Playvolley retained their position at the top of the women’s Super League after beating Paola Hibs 3-0 in their last match from the championship at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
This was always going to be a difficult match for Hibs and their cause was not helped with the first-set injury sustained by their setter Amy Guiga.
Playvolley seized the opportunity to open a healthy 16-3 lead before wrapping up the set at 25-7.
Hibs played better in the second set and produced some fine blocks through Bonnici before going 8-6 ahead.
However, Playvolley hit back strongly and though Hibs tried to change tactics, the leaders won the set 25-16 to open a 2-0 lead.
Playvolley showed their true prowess in the third set after racing to an 8-1 advantage. They played aggressively throughout, only allowing Hibs to collect a mere eight points as they strolled to victory.
In another match from the women’s league, Fleur de Lys Office Group had the better of other title aspirants Flyers 3-1 to keep the pressure on Playvolley.
Flyers won the opening set 25-19 but Fleur de Lys evened the scores after prevailing 25-23 in a tight second set.
Flyers were let down by a couple of untimely individual errors on services and invasion faults.
The third set saw Flyers going 7-3 up but Fleur de Lys were not undone and great play from Cutajar and Sarcina pushed the side to a 16-12 lead.
Fleur de Lys never looked back and with some clever attacks closed the set in their favour 25-19.
Fleur de Lys then extended the momentum to the fourth set to complete the comeback win.
This was Fleur de Lys’s third successive win against Flyers this season.
