August was something of a mixed bag in terms of tourism, according to figures released by the National Statistics Office.

The number of visitors fell by 1.9 per cent when compared to August 2010. The 191,583 tourists spent almost €210 million over the course of the month, slightly more than what was spent last year and a significant increase over the 2009 figure of €163 million. Despite the decline in August arrivals, there was still a seven per cent increase in tourism during the January-September period when compared to last year. At almost €850 million, tourist expenditure in the first nine months grew by nine per cent over the same period last year.
