Booking blunders are costing holidaymakers hundreds of pounds, according to a survey.

Those making a mistake when booking a trip online are paying an average of £232 to correct their error, the poll by LV= travel insurance found.

And as many as 15 per cent who have made a mistake have had to fork out more than £500 to put it right.

The survey showed that 48 per cent of holidaymakers now book online, with seven per cent making errors.

Of those who have made them, 24 per cent booked flights on the wrong day and 26 per cent booked them in the wrong name.

Other mistakes included selecting the wrong departure airport (eight per cent), forgetting to buy a return ticket (nine per cent) or even buying two tickets in the same direction instead of a round trip (five per cent).

When it came to booking a place to stay, 17 per cent of those who made mistakes had booked accommodation on the wrong dates and 8 per cent booked the wrong hotel.

Also, six per cent admitted they have booked accommodation that was too small for their group and five per cent had even booked it in the wrong resort.

As many as six per cent who made online mistakes said they were unable to get home as planned or were delayed and four per cent had to cancel their holiday.
