Tourist arrivals in July amounted to 200,440, a 9.7 per cent increase over the same month last year, according to the National Statistics Office.

The figures suggest this will be another record year for tourism as there was an 8.9 per cent increase in arrivals between January and July, with the number of tourists totalling 931,378.

In the first seven months, total tourism expenditure was estimated at €793.1 million. Though this is 7.1 per cent higher than that recorded for 2013, per capita expenditure dropped by 1.4 per cent to €860.

In July, tourist expenditure was put at €202.7 million, up 3.2 per cent over July 2013.

As for the cruise liner industry, there was a sharp increase with the number of overnight passengers in July almost trebling to 3,051.

The NSO noted that, 756 passengers, including 115 Maltese citizens, arrived in Malta due to unrest in Libya between July 15 and 31.
