I read (The Sunday Times, July 15) that the EU plans to impose tougher standards of VRT testing for all motor vehicles in Malta. This reform is long overdue, but think on.

The test is going to become more time consuming for testing stations and the inspectors will be required to undergo increased training. This will mean there will be insufficient capacity within the VRT system to complete all these tests on demand.

There will also be a problem getting a re-test if a vehicle fails. There will, of course, be an increased charge for the extra time a mechanic needs to perform the extended test, and to this will be added VAT.

If we look at the two-wheeled sector there is going to be a nightmare scenario. At present there are neither trained testers nor authorised testing stations.

There must be thousands of vehicles to test for a first time, and the local transport situation will become gridlocked until Transport Malta sets up a facility which trains inspectors to authorise premises as motorcycle testing stations.
