Roma icon Francesco Totti scored his 217th goal in Italy’s top flight to make third spot in Serie A’s all-time scoring list his own in a thrilling 4-2 defeat of Genoa on Sunday night.

Totti went into the match tied on a career 216 league goals with Jose Altafini and Giuseppe Meazza after scoring against Sampdoria at the end of last month.

The 36-year-old playmaker reduced the arrears on Sunday in the 27th minute after Roma had conceded twice in the first 15 minutes. Argentine-born Italy striker Pablo Osvaldo then scored a brace in either half while Argentine team-mate Erik Lamela made it four seven minutes from time.

Roma’s fourth win in eight games cemented fifth place, albeit eight points behind Juventus, with a two-point lead on Fiorentina.

Totti, who over the years has been used as a striker and a playmaker by various coaches at Roma, is now only eight goals short of the second place held by Sweden’s Gunnar Nordahl, the former Milan and Roma forward who scored 225 goals between 1949 and 1958.

Silvio Piola, who played for Pro Vercelli, Lazio, Juventus and Novar, holds the all-time record of 290.

2. Gunnar Nordahl - 225
3. Francesco Totti - 217
