Another sporting event from a series of initiatives undertaken by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dia-logue will be staged in Gozo this weekend as the top teams in the MBA League will be figuring in a two-day competition at the Sports Complex in Victoria.

The men’s teams of Athleta A-Z Electronics, BUPA Luxol, Siġġiewi, Rabat Depiro, Tata Motors Loyola and Floriana Francesco Fenech will be crossing the channel to take part in the first Gozo Basketball Cup.

Details of the competition and other activities related to the Gozo Cup were given earlier this week during the launching by Parlia-mentary Secretary Chris Said in the presence of Malta Basketball Association (MBA) president Paul Sultana.

Dr Said said this will be another initiative to strengthen sports values on the sister island besides expanding sports tourism to new areas.

“We have so much talent in Gozo but to make the most of this we first need to produce such op-portunities where our young gene-ration can experience sport at a higher level,” he said.

Already this year, different sports venues in Gozo hosted other top-notch events including waterpolo and football com-petitions and a series of horse races, Dr Said noted.

Tomorrow, the Malta Basketball Association will conduct a training camp for Gozitan children and the Gozo Cup starts on Saturday with 30-minute matches between the six teams which were pooled in two groups.

The classification matches and final will be played on Sunday.

Sultana said the association are giving all their backing to the Gozo Basketball Cup and the teams taking part will also grab the opportunity to introduce their foreigners for the new 2011-12 campaign which started earlier this month with the pre-season MBA Shield qualifiers.
