Former Fiorentina, Inter and Italy goalkeeper Francesco Toldo will be the special guest for Sunday’s 2012 Sports Awards, the Maltese Olympic Committee said yesterday.

Toldo needs no introduction to local sports enthusiasts after a 20-year career in Serie A and the national team, playing 266 times for Fiorentina and making 148 appear-ances for Inter after his transfer from Florence in 2001.

Toldo, who guarded Italy’s goal in the Euro 2000 final against France, had a glittering career at the San Siro where he won the Serie A title five times and also helped Jose Mourinho’s Inter clinch a famous scudetto, Coppa Italia and Cham-pions League treble in 2010.

This will be the 11th edition of the MOC Sports Awards.

When the contest was launched earlier this month, the MOC said 48 individuals from 12 different dis-ciplines will be acknowledged for their feats. They will be awarded platinum, gold, silver or bronze awards. The presentations night will be staged at the Hotel Excelsior on Sunday evening.

Last year, the distinguished personalities who accepted the MOC invitation to attend the presentations were former Olympic champions Antonio Rossi, Yuri Chechi and Pietro Mennea, all Italians.
