It is my intention to set up a coordination centre for charities and a food bank, both for humans and pets. It is a fact that the Maltese people are generous, however there is hidden poverty among us, which we fail to see unless we look for it. I do not intend collecting money, the good Lord will provide that. There is also the bad lord whose prompts we must ignore.
There are many charitable institutions in Malta, catering both for locals and the missions, however there is lack of proper communication and cooperation.
To add insult to injury, people donate wrong things to the wrong institutions, either out of ignorance or through lack of concern. While every institution can make good use of finances, the following are some institutions (by far the list is not complete) which would gladly accept material goods.
Sisters of Mother Theresa situated in Cospicua accept foodstuffs (canned, frozen and fresh) and other useful items which could be utilised by poor families in the inner harbour region.
Dar Suret il-Bniedem in Gżira accepts foodstuffs and caters for homeless people.
The Capuchin Missionary Office in Floriana accepts anything which is suitable, from stamps to foodstuffs and clothes, and including medicines.
The Ursuline Sisters accept baby foods and nappies.
The Millennium Chapel accepts food.
Waste not want not. Foodstuffs with a use-by date would still be in an edible condition and can be put to good use. Magħtab and other bring-in sites need not be overflowing.
Please use our resources wisely. Reduce, reuse, recycle, and help the world have a breath of fresh air.
There is also Moviment Missjunarju Ġesu fil-Proxxmu, at 103 Charity Street Victoria, run by Fr Ġorg Grima and his assistants.
Fr Grima runs missions in Brazil and Kenya.
Friends of mine are preparing to send a medical team to Nepal this coming winter. Nepal is a very poor country and its population has only food for three months of the year.
Together we are strong. Let us unite to heal the world and make it a better place.
