I was disgusted these past few days when I listened to the various arrogant comments of former Nationalist Party Sliema councillors Joanna Gonzi and Julian Galea, comments filled with hate against Labourites simply because they endorse a political belief that is different from theirs.
Particularly worrying was Mr Galea’s statement that those Labourites employed in his business are paid less than Nationalist employees. This implied that he pokes his nose into the political beliefs of his employees and is discriminating on the basis of this political belief, something which is against the law.
I seriously hope the police investigate the matter and that Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi realises that these are not the sort of people our localities need. Such incidents contrast deeply with the way Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat has been trying to bring people together in spite of their political background.
Dr Muscat’s speeches are always intended at surpassing the “us and them” divide, which has been present in our country throughout the 20th century.
That is one of the reasons why I shall be voting Labour both in the local council elections as well as in the general election. I’d rather vote for a party that wants to work on fair policies and which is trying to foster a sense of unity than choose a party that is constantly trying to cause trouble and instigate hatred on the basis of different political ideology.
