The humanitarian crisis and migration flows triggered by the Libya conflict will be discussed during a national debate on April 27.

Titled ‘Dealing with the Libya Migration Crisis’, the debate will bring together politicians, NGOs and experts in the field.

The main speakers will be Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, Labour spokesman for immigration Michael Falzon and UNHCR Malta head Jon Hoisaeter.

The debate is expected to explore how far Malta should go to control the migration flow from Libya, the EU response, relations with neighbouring countries, and the popular sentiment in the wake of the 1,200 immigrant arrivals since the North African crisis broke out.

Hosted by Intercontinental Malta in St Julian’s, this debate is the first in a quarterly series organised by The Times. It will be chaired by The Sunday Times deputy editor Herman Grech.

The discussion will start at 8.30 a.m., preceded by breakfast at 8 a.m. A limited number of seats are available. All those interested in contributing to the debate may contact Nicola Busuttil at Intercontinental Malta on 2376 5771 or e-mail timestodebate@intercontinental.com.mt.

Bookings will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until Friday.
