Three police officers were injured trying to arrest a suspected drug trafficker in Paceville yesterday morning, as he tried to make an escape and crashed into several cars.

The incident followed an operation on Saturday night in which the police seized three kilos of what they believe is cocaine from a Nigerian woman who had just got into Malta aboard the catamaran from Sicily.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Customs Department.

The police said the 28-year-old woman lives in Italy.

The investigation then led police to a 35-year-old man from Safi. They stopped him in Paceville yesterday at about 10am as he was allegedly on his way to pick up the drugs.

He made an attempt to escape by getting into a car and driving on the pavement, hitting several parked cars in the process and injuring three police officers.

He stopped only after crashing into an electricity pole, the police said.
