Your columnist Dr Claire Bonello (December 25) raised some interesting issues regarding popular current attitudes to marriage, decrying impossible idealism in romanticism, and promoting moderate realism.

The November issue of the diocesan magazine Flimkien carries interesting thoughts on the subject of life-long love by Archbishop Cremona, well worth looking up. They are embedded in his short piece on inter-generational relations for the EU 2012 Year of the Aged theme.

Equally interesting for those of us in the Balzan parish is the insert for our parish in the November Flim­kien.

It carries Pope Benedict’s recent en-couragement to youngsters not to fear marriage, and includes the realistic insight that love burns itself out when intimacy is allo­­wed to get ahead of commitment.
