I refer to the article Mdina Valley Blaze Destroys Trees (April 24).

I was watching the spectacular pyrotechnic display on Monday evening and I believe that the fire really was started by it. In any case, it seemed to me that the “stand-by” fire engine was located rather far away and took quite a long time to reach the area and do anything.

Be that as it may, I hope a thorough accident analysis will be carried out to determine how this could have been prevented or the damage minimised. What’s done is – unfortunately – done but one ought always to try to learn as much as possible from past events. Everything comes at a cost – be it financial, social, economic, environmental – so things need to be discussed and thought out holistically.

I must admit that I am fascinated by the art, science and technology involved in fireworks even though I am terrified of explosives and I do not like excessive noise or the air and water pollution that are caused by fireworks. However, I also love what is left of the Maltese countryside and several aspects of the Maltese culture and so I hope they will be preserved and enhanced.

Regarding the aftermath of this fire I appeal to the relevant authorities to assess the damage and plan what is best for the area as regards clean-up, replanting etc. Apart from professional help from environmentalists and the Agriculture Department I hope that voluntary groups and individuals will be invited to help in any way they can. I believe certain fireworks’ enthusiasts would also be willing to help because several of them also love nature, the countryside and, indeed, all that is good and wholesome in the Maltese islands.

Finally, may I ask all those reading this to also pray regularly for the safety of all those involved in the design, manufacture, transport etc. of fireworks and/or explosives for other purposes. May the Lord illuminate us all to create a safer, cleaner and more socially benign environment.
