For the 11th time in League Cup history, the holders were knocked out in the third round of the competition this season as 2011 winners Birmingham City fell at Manchester City (2-3) at the Etihad Stadium.

The Brummies raised many an eyebrow last year after going all the way in the League Cup, defeating Arsenal 2-1 in the final.

Two other Premier League sides who lost to Birmingham were Aston Villa (quarter-finals) and West Ham (semi-finals).

The clubs that successfully defended the League Cup were Nottingham Forest (back-to-back winners twice), Liverpool (won it four times in a row) and Manchester United (once).
