An employee of an equipment rental company who was allegedly caught red-handed squirrelling away scaffolding and tools was yesterday granted bail.

John Caruana, 50, of Marsaxlokk, was allegedly seen by his employers, Daniel Farrugia and Ian Tabone, owners of DIS Equipment in Attard, taking items on Wednesday last week after they decided to keep an eye on what was going on to catch him in the act.

Police sources said the owners had a sneaking suspicion an employee had been taking items from the company over a period of a few weeks. The sources said that once the suspect realised his employers were on to him, he tried to drive away and almost knocked them over.

Mr Caruana pleaded not guilty to stealing the items, attempting to seriously injure the two men, slightly injuring them and driving dangerously.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €7,000 and a deposit of €2,000.

Lawyers Michael and Lucio Sciriha appeared for the accused.
