Christmas Day lunch with family was one of the quietest ever. I woke up still humming O Lejl ta’ Skiet or O Ġesù Ħelwa Tarbija, with the music still ringing in my ears.

What do you expect when on the organ together with the choir we had Wayne Marshall who, together with Fr Ray Azzopardi, the parish priest of St Augustine’s church, was conducting and exhorting the community to “sing aloud and rejoice with all our heart”?

Pre-lunch conversation centred on Jean de Valette, following up the valid and irrefutable dissertation by Giovanni Bonello (The Sunday Times, December 23). The monument to the Grand Master should be placed in the middle, underneath the wall of St Catherine’s church and on a higher pedestal. I have already witnessed children dangling from his sword.

On the wall we could place the insignia, carvings in stone, of the eight langues together with the eight-pointed cross as the background. It will be visually friendly for most of those who enter Valletta through the main entrance and going up to Jean de Valette Square.

Is there a proper definition of the word “democracy”? When Bonello writes “The majority is wrong, so the majority wins” one tends to get confused as to the true meaning of democracy, or the way it is being bandied about.

Thanks to TVM and Joseph Calleja, our conversation had to stop and anything else was irrelevant. How true it is when they say “silence is golden”. We just watched his performance and heard his magnificent voice. How proud we felt that in this small beautiful island we have such an ambassador!

Although many people tend to ignore Christ, He represents love. He asked us to live together joyfully, not just for one day but the whole year. The majority of the community, from the smallest to the oldest, through the charity telethon L-Istrina, showed that they are open and ready to welcome with their heart anyone who is alone and in difficulty. This show of solidarity is a sign of our Christian values, which we should embrace all year round.
