The next site and time-specific piece within the Fragmenta platform is taking place this Sunday in Marsascala.

Untitled (Ix- Xemx) is an installation by artist Sandra Banthorpe scheduled to happen at the moment the work’s protagonist, the setting sun, makes its dramatic daily exit. As a visually poetic reminder of the inevitable, it also prompts one to remember that one cannot take everything for granted. Things are often not what they first appear to be.

According to calculations, the sun on the day will set at 18.55pm after a day which will be 12 hours, one minute and 35 seconds long. The piece invites those present to contemplate the sun’s irrefutable predictability and its ability to dazzle and seduce, rendering the average with a new lease of life.

Fragmenta is a platform that presents contemporary art in the form of pop-up exhibitions in public or semi-public spaces around the Maltese islands. As a project space without a physical space, Fragmenta’s mission is to offer experiences in the form of artistic events in different locations or settings in and around Malta lasting a maximum of 24 hours. Each exhibition is curated by Bettina Hutschek who also determines the setting and location. The exhibitions are born through a collaborative process between Fragmenta and the artist.

The artist of this Sunday’s event, Malta-born Banthorpe, lives primarily in Malta where she currently works as a practising artist, as well as an accomplished set decorator on internationally acclaimed feature films and stills work. Having studied at Chelsea College of Art and at Camberwell Art College, her work maintains a distinct element of sculptural being, be it in the reappropriation of the everyday, or the conjuring of a past life. Banthorpe is a self-professed sun aficionado.

■ Untitled (Ix-Xemx) is taking place at St Thomas Bay in Marsascala on Sunday from 5pm to 7.19pm. Entrance is free. Fragmenta is supported by Valletta 2018 – European Capital of Culture.
